UFC 2001: The Competition

UFC 2001 competition was devided into three categories:

Selection/Training at the Dutch Marine Corps
About 50 contenders had registered for the training weekend/pre-selection at the Marine Corps in Rotterdam in the Van Ghent barracks.

Friday afternoon around 14:00 hours the contestants were checked in and at 16:00 hours they were informed by a briefing and powerpoint presentation about the weekend, the disciplines, security and the regulations.

The contestants were assigned to their places to sleep and were requested to appear in military overalls at the training terrain.

First all contestants were trained in technique, safety and skill at all disciplines till 23:30 hours. The following morning they rose at 06:00 hours and run 10 km. Breakfast and then perform all disciplines at speed such as abseilen, obstacle course, ropes and climbing wall. Around 13:00 hours by bus to Den Helder for the swimming test en then all contestants and organization were picked up by 2 landing crafts to go to Texel.

Arriving at Texel all contenders were assigned a place to sleep and then they continued their training on Saturday and Sunday in groups of 7 to 8 ladies. Swimming, climbing, running, survival, technique, team spirit, cross country, mountain biking, amphibitic cross, and so on. During the training all participants were provided by the Marine Corps with all the food and drinks.

As closing of a great weekend the Marines surprised the contestants and the UFC team with a well organized BBQ.

Final Day 1
Swim / Hill Run
Swim: 150 m
Run: 450m-500m
Contenders start together from a boat about 150m off the shore. Once they have reached the beach, they put the shoes and run directly up the hill to the finish on top of the hill.

Push Up
Contenders do the discipline push up with 2 at the same time, as many repetitions as possible in 2 minutes. You may rest but the time goes on.

2 contenders start at the same time and cover the course of 2500 m.

Fashion Show (Casual Wear)
First day of fashion show, casual wear of ESPRIT at the catwalk of the Fortina Hotel in Malta. Contenders present themselves for the jury in different outfits of casual wear.

Final Day 2
Mountain bike
2 contenders start at the same time on a down hill rough field course about 2,5 km ending at a salt-plateau bordering the sea.
The turning point is at the end of the plateau and the contenders should go up to the finish via the salt-plateaus filled with sea water.

Abseiling
2 contenders will perform a cliff descent of about 95 m at the same time. Once they have arrived at the bottom, they will be detached and there is only space for one contender to start the way up. Contenders should go up to the finish via a course only passable with difficulty.

Finale Day 3
Fort Angello (Surprise Discipline)
Contenders are surprised with a discipline for which they were not able to train in advance. 4 contenders start at the same time on a so called bottle neck course. At this course only 4-3-2-1 contenders can pass at the same time.

In the surprise discipline are several disciplines as abseilen, obstacle course, climbing, tyres dribble and running.

Fashion Show (Bikini/bathing suit)
The second day show: bathing clothes of ESPRIT on the catwalk of the Fortina Hotel in Malta. Contenders present themselves for the jury in several bathing clothes

Finale Day 4
Run/Kajak
2 contenders start from the boat to the kayak and row to the cave. Once arrived contenders should walk via the stairs to the bay where they via the water should climb the stairs for a final sprint to the end of the boulevard and then dive into the sea to swim back to the kayak and row back tot the finish at the boat

Azzure Window
2 contenders start with a downhill run to the kayaks and row via an opening in the cliffs to the sea where they return via the Azzure Window to the opening in the cliffs. Then they row over the lake to the finish.

Mountainbike/Dive
Start with 1 contender at the time. The contender takes the extreme steep downhill course to the beach where they, when arriving, carry the Merida mountain bike above their head to the boat (the bike may not become wet).
Contenders put the bike in the boat and swim back to the beach to the finish, touching 'the Maria statue'.

The third day show is of Business Wear of ESPRIT on the catwalk of the Fortina Hotel in Malta. Contenders present themselves for the jury in different outfits of Business Wear.

Finale Day 5
Latt Pully
During 2 minutes the contender pulls half of her own body weight with the triangle as many time as possible against her breast. Resting is allowed although the time goes on.

During 2 minutes the contender pushes half of her own body weight with the crossbar as many times from her. Resting is allowed, although time goes on.

Car Pull
Contender pulls the Mitsubishi Pinin of 1150 kg over a course of 50 m to the finish.

2 contenders start at the same time at an originally military obstacle course of about 200 m.

Finale Day 6
Valletta Run
The 8 best contenders start at the same time with a downhill run of 25% through the Old Mintstreet in the capital town Valletta. Arriving downhill the contenders touch the turning point and run back up again to the finish.

Run Popeye Village (Surprise Discipline)
2 contenders start at the same time with a run through Popeye Village, arriving at the bottom they go in the kayak and row to the cliffs where they have to crawl 20 m via the catcrawl rope to the marking. Then they jump in the water and swim again 25 m to the landing and follow the course with and end sprint uphill to the finish.

Beauty Contest
The third day show: evening dresses of ESPRIT on the catwalk of the Fortina Hotel in Malta. Contenders present themselves before the jury in different evening dresses.
